DILG MESSAGE ON THE 21ST NATIONAL URBAN PEST CONTROL/ ZERO WASTE, ZERO PEST WEEK

To the National Committee on Urban Pest Control [NCUPC], congratulations on your 21st National Urban Pest Control and Zero Waste. Zero Pest Week on September 25-30, 2017.

Pest control is underappreciated aspect of our daily life. It is, after all, through this industry's hard work and vigilance that our homes and food are kept free from pests that may destroy our households or carry diseases like Dengue or Zika.

However, despite their important role in keeping citizens' safe, pest control only comes into the picture when infestation problems occur.

This year's event with the theme, "Imagine Food Safety, Public Health & Property Protection Without Pest Control," will hopefully provide increased awareness and vital information on how to prevent the spread of harmful pests in our surroundings and instill to us more proactive prospective regarding pest control.

It is my hope that the NCUPC remains a reliable and constant partner in promoting eco-friendly pest control method to Filipinos. Together, we can achieve a food secure, healthy and empowered citizenry.

May you have a meaningful celebration.

21ST NATIONAL URBAN PEST CONTROL/ ZERO WASTE, ZERO PEST WEEK: OFFICIAL MESSAGE OF PRESIDENT RODRIGO ROA DUTERTE

21ST NATIONAL URBAN PEST CONTROL/ ZERO WASTE, ZERO PEST WEEK: OFFICIAL MESSAGE OF PRESIDENT RODRIGO ROA DUTERTE

MALACANAN PALACE
Manila

My warmest greetings to the National Committee on Urban Pest Control [NCUPC] as it celebrates its "21st Zero Waste, Zero Pest" Week.

The manifestation of new diseases can be attributed to how urbanization rapidly changes our environmental landscape and to how we manage our waste disposal system. Mishandling of garbage can lead to even greater threats to our physical well-being and to the ecosystem.

Thus I commend NCUPC for its initiative to increase public awareness about the importance of keeping a clean environment to our health. As part of the "Clean Up The World Month" of the Department of Environment & Natural Resources [DENR], I hope that this event will put the spotlight on our advocacy of preventing the spread of illnesses through Effective Pest Control.

Together, let us work towards achieving healthy, sustainable and environmental friendly communities for our people.

I wish you a successful event and all the best in your future endeavor.

Rodrigo Roa Duterte
President

RATIONALE

Rapid changes in the urban pest control industry, advances in telecommunications that allow easy access to pest information, and continuous improvements in transportation infrastructures that promote efficient mobility of the people and products from the farms or rural areas to urban centers should be connected to the ideas on sustainable development highlighting environmental and food security issues.

Human and product mobility facilitate the unabated spread of urban pests and pest-borne diseases. The role that pest control plays using green technologies to contain possible pest and disease outbreaks should become the standard in urban pest control particularly with the majority of the population are in the urban centers. Strict audit and quality control procedures which are imposed by customers, the food industry sector including product exporters has to uncompromisingly deal with urban pests, storage pests and rodents that contaminate food in its manufacturing facilities.

But no matter how important pest control is, it has not been given as equally important to public health, food safety in food manufacturing industry sector and property protection in construction industry and real estate industry sectors. Pest control is contracted only when an infestation or pest problem has already occurred.

Hence, it is the primary objective of the conference to place pest control in the center on all efforts of food safety, public health, and property protection with the emphasis on protecting the present human lifestyle and his mobility in urban areas. In addition, knowledge on the different urban pest control and enviro-related technologies that are locally available but proven effective against common urban pests and alternative fuels for use in the food industry and support “Buy Filipino-Made Products, Buy Local” shall also be given importance.
